living lightly

We built our new home in 2010, completely unprepared and inexperienced of what was to come. We rented another home nearby, demolised the mobile home we had lived in for 9 years and embarked on the most exciting and challenging experiences of our lives.

We chose a custom design and used local sub-contractors to create exactly the living space we wanted. From storms and the need to fell some trees for safety, we collected, milled and cured quite a store of maple and hemlock lumber, which we incorporated into the interior construction, usomg much of that lumber for spaces inside the house, such as door and window facings, interior decor and furniture. We intended the inside of our home reflect our love of the natural world outside.

It was a long and grueling proecess and we found able local craftsmen to work for us. It occupied us so completely that we failed to document its ups and downs in our blogs, but here is just a taste.

A key contributor inside the house was Jonathan Seaton of Seaton's Fine Custom Woodworking. He created Maura's quilting studio and designed and built the rustic stairs. You can see the excellent projects he has created, among two major works he did for us, at his website.
